Pioneering Alternative Cinema at Shahbag
On Friday, June 28th, 2019, the Bangladesh Film Institute Alumni Association (BFIAA) convened its landmark Biennial Conference 2019 at the Seminar Hall of the Central Public Library in Shahbag, Dhaka. The assembly brought together an inspiring cross-section of graduates spanning the institute's foundational years to recent course completions.
The gathering was attended by pioneering graduates from BFI's inaugural 1st batch, including renowned feature filmmaker Bulbul Biswas, along with distinguished mentors and cinema practitioners. BFI Director and acclaimed documentary filmmaker Tanvir Mokammel graced the conference as Chief Guest, delivering a stirring discourse on the artistic and ethical imperative of independent filmmaking.
Outgoing President Imtiaz Pavel presided over the formal proceedings, with institute faculty member Sagir Mostafa expertly moderating the deliberations. Renowned scholar and filmmaker Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Hossain participated as Special Guest and was subsequently proposed and elected as President for the 2019–2021 term.
The assembly concluded with the democratic establishment of two governing bodies: a 7-member Advisory Council led by Tanvir Mokammel as Chief Advisor, and a 23-member Executive Council entrusted with steering association programs, filmmaker welfare, and film publication initiatives.

গত ২৮ জুন ২০১৯ তারিখে বাংলাদেশ ফিল্ম ইনস্টিটিউট এলামনাই এসোসিয়েশন এর সম্মেলন ২০১৯ হয়ে গেল পাবলিক লাইব্রেরির সেমিনার হলে। এই সভায় প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন বাংলাদেশ ফিল্ম ইনস্টিটিউটের পরিচালক বরেণ্য চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাতা তানভীর মোকাম্মেল। বিশেষ অতিথি ছিলেন ড. মোহাম্মদ জাহাঙ্গীর হোসেন।
এলামনাই এসোসিয়েশনের সভাপতি ইমতিয়াজ পাভেলের সভাপতিত্বে এই অনুষ্ঠানের সঞ্চালনায় ছিলেন বাংলাদেশ ফিল্ম ইনস্টিটিউটের শিক্ষক সগীর মোস্তফা। বিএফআই-এর প্রথম ব্যাচের ছাত্র, চলচ্চিত্র পরিচালক বুলবুল বিশ্বাস সহ বিভিন্ন ব্যাচের ছাত্র-ছাত্রী উপস্থিত ছিলেন এই সম্মেলনে।
এই দ্বি-বার্ষিক সম্মেলন আগামী দুবছর (২০১৯-২০২১) এর জন্য একটি উপদেষ্টা পরিষদ ও নির্বাহী পরিষদ গঠনের মধ্য দিয়ে শেষ হয়। তানভীর মোকাম্মেল কে প্রধান উপদেষ্টা করে ৭ সদস্যের উপদেষ্টা পরিষদ এবং ড. মোহাম্মদ জাহাঙ্গীর হোসেন কে সভাপতি করে ২৩ সদস্যের নির্বাহী পরিষদ গঠন করা হয়।
